Anyone who has a substantial buildup of tartar, is prone to gum disease, or has staining can benefit from ultrasonic scaling. Most patients experience little or no discomfort during the procedure. Ultrasonic cleaning takes about one-third less time to hand scaling and many patients prefer ultrasonic cleaning because it does not require the clinician to use the same force as a hand scaler. In ultrasonic scaling, only the tip of the tool touches the tooth surface, and only for a short time. An ultrasonic unit can also remove deposits of plaque and tartar from under the gum line by using an extremely small tip, which can cause less discomfort and result in a deeper and better cleaning.
